Serbian ruling coalition MP says protests are not politically motivated

A Serbian ruling coalition MP told N1 on Wednesday that political reasons are not behind the nightly noise protests.

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) MP Djordje Milicevic said that he understands the impatience of the people protesting by making noise at night, adding that he is convinced that they are not protesting for political reasons. The SPS is headed by Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.

He said that part of the opposition are behaving like “political leeches”, attaching to the applause for doctors and nurses battling the coronavirus pandemic which he said everyone should support.

“At 8:05 pm, part of the opposition decided to attach themselves politically. The citizens have a legitimate right to protest if that does not endanger the rights of others, if it is in line with the law and if it does not jeopardize the functioning of the state but the least of them are banging on pots for political reasons. I understand their impatience and the difficult period they went through but that was the only way to save lives,” Milicevic said.
