Serbian Ombudsman Zoran Pasalic warned on Wednesday that the handicapped and Roma minority are among the people most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

A press release said that the Serbian government needs to provide support to the handicapped and make sure their support services continue, including personal assistants, care for children and household help which, Pasalic said, are hindered by the curfew.

“Added measures are needed in the state of emergency to provide help for the inhabitants of inadequate Roma settlements, primarily food and hygienic products,” he said and warned that a number of those settlements do not have access to running water.

The Ombudsman called NGOs to play a more active role in protecting the rights of vulnerable groups during the pandemic.
