Belgrade deputy Mayor says aid going out to elderly

Belgrade deputy Mayor Goran Vesic told N1 that the city authorities and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce had prepared packages of basic foodstuffs and hygienic products for pensioners with the lowest income.

People over the age of 65 in urban areas and over 70 in rural areas have been banned from leaving their homes during the state of emergency imposed by the authorities to combat the coronavirus pandemic.  

The parcels for pensioners with income of up to 30,000 Dinars a months (1 Euro – 118 Dinars) will include sugar, cooking oil, flour, biscuits, detergent and soaps most of which are donations, Vesic said, adding that the distribution of the packages will start on Friday.  

Vesic said that the Belgrade Arena where the goods will be stored and packed will be disinfected and the packages left outside the doors of the pensioners.  

He said that the city has some 1,400 volunteers in call centers to help get supplies or medical aid to people who can’t leave their homes.
