Nebojsa Stefanovic, Serbia's Interior Minister, said on Tuesday that President Aleksandar Vucic should soon talk to his Montenegrin counterpart Milo Djukanovic following the escalation of conflicts in the coastal republic, the Beta news agency reported.

Speaking to the state RTS, Stefanovic said Serbia was’ t happy about the way the situation in Montenegro was unfolding and that talks between Vucic and Djukanovic should happen soon to protect the Serbs in the neighbouring country.

He added Belgrade would wait for official information about the beatings of a young man in the capital Podgorica centre but said Serbia’s authorities were worried that it was the ethnically-motivated violence.“When you have a smashed head, one incident, violence in the street and too much passion, more has to be done to ease the tensions,“ Stefanovic said.

Asked about last night’s meeting of the top state officials called by Vucic, Stefanovic said the topics included economic issues, since, as he put it, the preservation of peace and stability in the region was important for investors to come.

„We mostly talked about Vucic’s visits to the regional states; he’s soon to go to Bosnia and Herzegovina. We also discussed Serbia’s investments, new jobs abroad, the construction of Pristina – Merdare (the bordering line with Kosovo),“ Stefanovic said.
