The Kingdom of Serbia and the United States established diplomatic relations on December 26, 1882 when the agreement on establishing relations between the two countries was published in Belgrade, the Srna news agency said on Thursday.

Parliament heard a decree by Serbia’s ruler at the time Prince Milan Obrenovic approving a trade agreement and consular convention with the United States. That convention also protected the rights of the citizens of the two countries, allowing them free entry into both countries along with residence and work while protecting their personal and other property in the same way that the status of most favored nation does.

Serbia-US relations first peaked during World War I when a statement by President Woodrow Wilson was published in the American press and read out in churches across the country. The flag of Serbia was raised above the White House.

The good relations continued in Yugoslavia after World War 2 but changed during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, improving after the year 2000.
