Serbian Post Office staff continue strike despite reports of suspensions

Two thirds of the employees of the Serbian Post Office continued their strike over higher pay on Wednesday amid reports of suspensions of some strikers, gathering in front of the post office building in the Zemun suburb of the Serbian capital.

Spokesman Stefan Mitrovic said the post office management has shown no understanding for the fact that a large number of employees face hard conditions at work. “We know that there have been some suspensions which means they are imposing repressive measures,” he said.

He called the public to show understanding for the problems with postal services during the strike, adding that not all post office staff were on strike at all post office outlets.

Mitrovic said that it’s in the interest of the strikers to finish things and get back to work.

“Every post office has some people who are satisfied with their status and we are not forcing anyone to stop working. We are dissatisfied and that is why we are on strike,” he said.

He said the Post Office is not a budget beneficiary but lives off its own income and added that a way could be found to raise salaries.
