The whistleblower who revealed the dubious dealings at the Krusik munitions plant was given an award by the New Optimism organization at his home on Friday.
Whistleblower Aleksandar Obradovic leaked documents showing that a privately-owned company with links to the authorities had been given preferential prices for the purchase of mortar shells from Krusik which were resold to a Saudi buyer and ended up in the hands of Islamic extremists in the Yemen. The deals involved the father of Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, Branko acting for the GIM company.
Obradovic has been in house arrest after he was released from jail in Belgrade after being arrested in his office.
He was told that he was being given the Good Example of New Optimism award at his home in Valjevo by caricaturist Dusan Petricic who gave him a framed caricature. Petricic is known for his criticism of the authorities.
The award will be received by Obradovic’s wife at a ceremony in Belgrade on December 10. The New Optimsim web site says that the organization rallies “exceptional individuals” and promotes their activities in public.
