The Serbian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it has been informed that Ghana has revoked its decision to recognize Kosovo.

“The government of the republic of Ghana has decided to revoke Ghana’s recognition of Kosovo as an independent state,” the foreign ministry said in a press release, adding that Ghana is the 16th UN member state to revoke the decision to recognize Kosovo.

The government of Ghana said in a note to the Serbian Foreign Ministry that it’s decision was “in contravention of the Helsinki Final Act and more fundamentally in contravention of UN Security Council Resolution 1244”. “The decision to recognize Kosovo turned out to be premature…. The decision of the Government of Ghana at the time must have, however, been inspired by the quest for peace and harmony,” the diplomatic note added.

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said that Ghana is the biggest country which revoked the decision to recognize Kosovo to date and recalled that “Ghana was a traditional friend of Yugoslavia”. He said that he expects more countries to follow suit.
