The local authorities in the Western Serbian town of Ivanjica have managed to stop more heating oil from spilling into the Golijska Moravica river.

The local authorities declared a state of emergency after a large quantity of heating oil spilled into the river from tanks at a local hospital. Specialist teams from the Internal Affairs Ministry’s Emergency Situations Sector and the Srbijavode waters company were brought in to help contain the ecological disaster. The oil slick was stopped from flowing further down the river, the Serbian state TV (RTS) reported.

What was left of the 70 tons of heating oil was removed from the hospital tanks. The local authorities said the town’s drinking water supply was safe because the wells are located upstream from the oil spill.

National Environmental Protection Inspectors ordered the implementation of measures to prevent soil pollution and banned the use of river water for irrigation.
