The ‘Venus of Zupa’, a goddess of fertility’s figurine over 6,000 years old was discovered in central Serbia’s district of Aleksandrovac at the Vitkovacko polje (field), the Srna news agency reported on Tuesday.

The discovery is very significant for the world’s scientific community, Sanja Crnobrnja Krasic, who found the figurine, has told the Vecernje Novosti daily.

She said that ‘Zupa Venus’ was the fourth monumental Venus discovered at the same location, and the first since 1969.

The figurine whose upper part was found in whole, while arms and legs were separated, originated from 3,500 to 4,000 years BC.

Crnobrnja Krasic said that the discovery happened almost by chance, during the placing of the sewage pipes.

Only 50 metres away from ‘Zupa Venus’ location, a half of a century ago, the archaeologists discovered four goddesses’ figurines from the Neolithic period, three of which were monumental and became a part of the priceless world heritage.

The best known of those is ‘The Lady of Aleksandrovac’, which belongs to 12 most significant pre-historic Venuses in the world.
