Since the beginning of the summer, some 120 people have been killed in traffic accidents in Serbia and since the beginning of the year, police have issued 680,000 misdemeanours including close to 200,000 for speeding, Police Director Vladimir Rebic said on Sunday.

Rebic told Radio-Television of Serbia that in the past ten years between 170 to 260 people have been killed in traffic accidents during the summer months.

„That statistic is better than at the beginning of the 21st century,” he said, arguing that it is a result of authorities introduced “measures which even some wealthier countries in the region do not have.”

“The law can hardly be more rigorous. Reckless driving carries a punishment of 30 to 60 days in prison as well as a fine in the amount of 120,000 to 140,000 Serbian Dinar, but we still have at least 150 such drivers every month,” Rebic said.
