The Hungarian government has confirmed that it allowed the transport of Russian armored vehicles to Serbia on a civilian flight, the Politiko portal reported.

The Serbian military took delivery of 30 Russian BRDM-2 armored scout vehicles. Media reports said that the vehicles were being transported by ship on the Danube but were stopped by the Romanian government. Serbian officials did not want to confirm how the vehicles were brought to Serbia.

The Hungarian government said that the transport by civilian aircraft did not require a special permit. “We were informed that a civilian aircraft was entering Hungarian air space but that was just protocol,” the Hungarian prime minister’s cabinet chief Gergely Gulyás said.

Politiko reported that European Union sources confirmed that Brussels was informed about reports on the transport of the Russian armored vehicles, saying that the EU member states bear the responsibility of implementing the sanctions imposed on Russia following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
