Chinese Cyberspace Administration chief Zhuang Rongwen said in Belgrade on Monday that leading Chinese companies are interested in helping develop a 5G network in Serbia.

Zhuang told Serbian Telecommunications Minister Rasim Ljajic that China is prepared to help develop Serbia’s digital economy to make it a leader in southeastern Europe.

A statement from Ljajic’s cabinet said that the first project of that kind would be a smart city program in the southern city of Nis in 2020 followed by similar programs in other places across the country.

Ljajic is reported to have expressed satisfaction with cooperation between the two countries. He said that one of the most visible results of that cooperation is the laying of a network of optical cables by Telekom Serbia and China’s Huawei, allowing 750,000 households access to the Internet at top speeds.
