The opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) said on Saturday that one of its members was beaten up by the mayor of the eastern Serbian town of Knjazevac and two of his associates.
Dalibor Stanojevic is the Democratic party’s MP in the municipal council, he said that the attack was witnessed by several people, the party said.
Stanojevic told N1 that he had an argument with another member of the municipal council and that the mayor, Milan Djokic, approached him and hit him. He said he fainted after being struck.
Police said they were investigating the incident.
Most opposition parties condemned the attack, while the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which the mayor is a member of, has not made any statements yet.
