Top official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Nebojsa Stefanovic, said on Saturday that a government’s legitimacy should be checked when that issue is frequently raised by the public but that “it is questionable whether extraordinary elections would be the best path for Serbia.”

“Could we bring Volkswagen here if we have extraordinary elections?” Stefanovic asked, pointing out the possible negative message extraordinary elections could send to foreign investors.

“We need to look at what is good for our country. We have given President (Aleksandar Vucic) competencies to decide about the elections in accordance with the international negotiations he will be leading and in accordance with how he sees the future of Serbia,” he told Kurir.

The decision of whether Serbia needs extraordinary elections depends on several factors, including the forthcoming European Parliament elections, Stefanovic argued.
