The Serbian AIK Bank has completed the acquisition of a majority of shares of the Slovenian Gorenjska Bank, bank officials said in Ljubljana on Wednesday.

The AIK Bank bought 90.11 percent of the Slovenian bank’s shares.

“The AIK Bank is strengthening its position in the region and can now offer clients in the European Union quality services,” AIK Bank executive board chairwoman Jelena Galic told a news conference. Galic also chairs the Gorenjska Bank oversight board.

She said the acquisition makes AIK the first bank from Serbia to move onto the EU market.

Gorenjska President Maria Henjaka said that a new banking group is being formed to play an important role both in Slovenia and abroad and become known as an innovative bank.

AIK Bank is a leading Serbian bank based in Belgrade. It reported more than 500 million Euros in capital last year and assets of 1.8 billion with deposits of 1.2 billion and placements of more than a billion Euros.

The Gorenjska Bank has assets of 1.8 billion Euros and 205.2 million Euros in capital.
