Half of the women in Serbia have experienced some form of violence, the United Nations Country Team in Serbia warned on Thursday.

Every second woman in Serbia has experienced psychological violence and every third woman has experienced physical violence, a statement said adding that women do 2.2 times more unpaid care and domestic work than men.

“Globally, around 740 million women currently make their living in the informal economy with limited access to social protection, public services and infrastructure that could increase their productivity and income security,” it added.

“Gender equality is one of the key topics of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and at the heart of our current five year Development Partnership Framework with the Government of Serbia, but also one of the core values of the EU. The UN Country Team in Serbia remains committed to work hand in hand with the Government and people of Serbia and all relevant stakeholders so that ‘no woman is left behind,” UN Resident Coordinator Steliana Nedera is quoted as saying.
