The US ambassador to Belgrade Kyle Scott told Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic that his country permanently called on Kosovo’s Government to abolish the import taxes on goods from Serbia because they were an obstacle to the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue, PM's office statement said, as carried by the Beta news agency.

The statement quoted the ambassador as saying the US supported Belgrade’s efforts to normalise relations with Pristina and that his country was ready to help in a search for a sustainable solution that would secure stability and progress for the whole region.

The US urged Kosovo in late January to immediately suspend tariffs, warning otherwise it would suffer „consequences“ in its ties with Washington.

„We reiterate our view that an immediate suspension of the tariff on imports from Serbia…is one necessary measure to restore momentum to the dialogue process“ between the two sides, the U.S. Embassy in Pristina said then.

On Wednesday, Brnabic also said it was necessary that Pristina revoked the decision on the 100 percent import duties introduced last November if the Brussels dialogue was to resume. She reiterated the decision violated the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA).

Brnabic added her recent visit to the States showed a lot of potential for broader cooperation between the two countries.
