A Serbian ruling party official resigned on Friday as CEO of the Corridors highway company over the traffic accident caused by his driver in which one person was killed.

Zoran Babic said he was quitting the job after Internal Affairs Minister and ranking Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) official Nebojsa Stefanovic announced his resignation on the pro-government TV Pink.

“A life has been lost. For me as a man that is enough for me to leave the position in which I was at the moment of the grave accident. Although I was just riding in the car, for me as a man, that is reason enough to no longer perform the duties of CEO of the Corridors Serbia,” Babic said in a stement.

The statement added that security and safety were his goals and that his motives are completely clear in resigning.

“For me as an SNS member, as an official of the party headed by President Aleksandar Vucic, I need no invitation, no order. Knowledge and morality, responsibility and primarily humanity and decency are the traits which our president demands of all of us. And he does not need to tell me anything. If he nominated me for this post, I know what I have to do,” Babic wrote.

He added that he is at the disposal of the president, party and Serbia.

Babic’s driver was arrested earlier on Friday and charged with causing the crash at a highway toll booth when he rear-ended a car, killing one of its passengers.

The Insajder portal reported that the Skoda Superb car that Babic was riding in was bought by the Bulgarian company Trejs which is doing work on the Corridor 10 highway in Serbia. The company said it was under contractual obligation to buy up to six cars for the needs of the Corridors Serbia company.
