A hundred tonnes of toxic waste has been removed from the grounds of the tractor brake factory in Loznica where it had been stored for decades, Serbian Environment Minister Goran Trivan said during a tour of the factory on Tuesday.

A ministry statement said that the waste was removed and put into permanent storage in a joint effort by the government and local authorities.

“Loznica is potentially one of the most endangered places in Serbia because of leftover waste. A total of 90 tonnes of hazardous waste was removed from the brake factory and another 10 tonnes of communal waste is ready to be moved which means that another one of scores of sites across Serbia is being cleared of historic waste,” the minister is quoted as saying.

Trivan said that historic waste left over from companies which are being restructured or privatized is a priority for the ministry, adding that the permanent removal of leftover hazadous waste requires money and awareness.
