Serbia’s President said on Sunday that he will not meet any of the demands voiced during Saturday’s protests against violence spearheaded by the opposition, no matter how many people gather and how long the protest lasts.

“Walk around as much as you want to, I will not meet any of the demands. Even if there was five million of you,” Aleksandar Vucic said.

Thousands marched the streets of Belgrade the evening before, protesting against violent attacks against opposition leaders.

The gathering was inspired by a recent attack on opposition politician Borko Stefanovic, who was beaten on the street in Kursevac in November. He later displayed his blood-soaked shirt which inspired the name of the protests ‘Stop the bloody shirts’.

“You can only win the election, and when you do, go ahead and fulfil what was promised to the people, but I will not be pressed to do anything, and that is what sets me apart from others,” Vucic said.

The President referred to opposition politicians who have organised the “Stop to bloody shirts” protest.

He said they can organise protest walks as much as they want to, but that they are not allowed to cause physical harm or vandalise.

Vucic said he did not see many young protesting that it was mostly the middle and upper class. It would be good to see what they are not happy with, he added.

“If you want elections, fine, but I will not even consider giving in to your nonsense, I didn’t even do so when you organised walks for four months straight,” he said.
