The reconstruction works in the Belgrade central Trg republike (The Republic’s Square) stopped after the excavation discovered the archaeological remains confirmed to be those of the Württemberg gate, the Beta news agency reported.

The Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic told the state RTS television that the experts from the Institute for Protection of Monuments confirmed the remains’ origin.

Württemberg gate was erected during the Austrian rule over Belgrade between 1717 – 1739, Vesic said.

The gate was named after Charles Alexander of Württemberg who governed the Kingdom of Serbia as regent from 1720 until 1733.
