Serbian Environment Minister Goran Trivan said he wants every local community in the country to have at least one inspector in charge of protecting the environment.

“A lot depends on inspectors. They are selected to do the job and if they don’t issue fines no one will. We have to fight the people poisoning our home,” the minister is quoted as saying at a seminar on industrial emissions.

A ministry press release added that Trivan warned inspectors not to turn a blind eye to pollution because ecological awareness is in Serbia’s best interest.

The inspectors also have to check whether local authorities are using green funds properly, however small, as a way to implement environmental policy, he said.
