Serbia is most likely to get an extended deadline to meet the recommendations of the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), Marin Mrcela, the group president told N1.

“The procedure that the GRECO launched concerning Serbia is not something special but is a regular procedure that is launched anytime a country fails to implement the recommendations provided by the Group of States against Corruption,” explained Mrcela, who is also acting as a Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Croatia.

“Serbia is, unfortunately, one of the countries that haven’t done a lot here,” he added.

It was assessed in May this year that Serbia regressed in the fight against corruption, and has only partly implemented six of 13 recommendations.

GRECO President told N1 the official Belgrade was now expected to send additional materials by October 31.

“The recommendations concerning Serbia require the changes to the Constitution because it is necessary to rule out the parliament from the procedure of appointment of judges and prosecutors, that’s the standard. Legislative and executive authorities must have no influence they’re having now,” Mrcela said adding that the changes would hopefully take place in the near future.
