This year’s Belgrade International Theater Festival (BITEF) will open on September 14 with French director Joris Lacoste’s piece Suite N°3 'Europe’ at the Yugoslav Drama Theater.

Lacoste’s play is performed in several languages and is based on the Encyclopédie de la parole project.

This year’s BITEF slogan is A World Without People and the invited plays focus on contemporary Europe and the world, including topics such as the rise of the extreme right, authoritarian regimes and xenophobia. The focus of this year’s festival is artistic installations which the audience walks through.

BITEF art Director Ivan Medenica told N1 that the festival should continue provoking thought and critical views. “We do not want to seem catastrophic but we do believe that the art that BITEF has always promoted should stimulate thinking, critical views and perhaps in some final instance call to action and a change of reality,” he said.
