Serbian Health Institute says West Nile Virus kills 11

The Serbian Public Health Institute said on Tuesday that 11 people had died after contracting the West Nile Virus as of August 14, 2018.

The report said that 126 cases were registered as of that date, mainly in Vojvodina as well as in the Belgrade area and areas south of the Serbian capital.  

The Institute recalled that the West Nile Virus was first registered in Serbia in July 2012, adding that 574 patients had been diagnosed with the illness between 2012 and 2017 with 61 of them dying. The virus is carried by mosquitoes and is not passed from one human being to another, it said and added that the virus brings flu-like symptoms.
