European Union Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn said on Monday that in the last few months the Western Balkans countries did a lot on their road to the block's membership.

Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the EU summit on Western Balkans held in London, he said that the most serious problems in the region still were “political will, determination and readiness to act.”

“But, the progress has been achieved. There is awareness in the region about what has to be done. In the last few months, a lot has already been accomplished. I’m a great optimist, ” he added.

He said that the Berlin process was launched to boost the cooperation in the Western Balkans and it proved to be “very effective.”

“However,” Hahn added, “plenty remains to be done. It is a good opportunity for the regional countries to prepare for their European perspective.”
