Search continues for missing Serbian journalist

The Serbian police and Gendarmerie continued the search for missing journalist Stefan Cvetkovic in the Vojvodina town of Bela Crkva on Friday.

Cvetkovic, an investigative journalist who has been threatened and sued by people he wrote about, was reported missing a day earlier with the police saying his car had been found with the doors open and lights still on.  

Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic tweeted that the police have been investigating Cvetkovic’s disappearance for more than 30 hours, adding that the efforts have been stepped up on the second day of the search and that he would hold a news conference on Friday afternoon  

An investigating judge called any possible witnesses to report any information on Cvetkovic to the local prosecutor’s office and added that there has been no breakthrough in the investigation yet. Judge Tihomir Knezevic said the police had been ordered to try to locate Cvetkovic’s mobile phones and search his apartment and the homes of people he had been in contact with. “We are doing everything to determine what, if anything, happened,” the judge told the Beta news agency.

 The Ministry of Culture and Information issued a statement saying that it was concerned over the disappearance of the investigative journalist and adding that it was closely following efforts to find out what happened to him.

European Union Delegation chief Sem Fabrizi tweeted that he was concerened over the disappearance. „We are deeply concerned with the disappearance of journalist Stefan Cvetkovic. We call on the Serbian authorities to continue investigation to find him. We will continue to follow this situation closely,“ he wrote
