Aleksandar Vucic, the President of Serbia, said on Tuesday that the whistle-blowers were “more than necessaryĆ in the country, adding they did not undermine the system but protected it.

Participating at the opening of a two-day international conference on the protection of whistle-blowers in the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts organised by the anti-corruption Pistaljka (Whistle) website, Vucic told reporters that he was satisfied that the Whistle-Blower Protection Act came into force three years ago.

“There are many things we are the best at in the region, but we have to work harder, to change our mindset and to understand that they (whistle-blowers) do not undermine the system, but to the contrary, they protect it,” Vucic said.

He added he hoped that “we will be able to essentially change our attitude toward the whistle-blowers because they are more than necessary for us.”

Vucic said the corruption was “a serious disease and real monster of the modern age,” adding the state would continue to support the fight against it.

“I believe that as a society we will have enough power to implement the laws more strictly and then the fight against corruption will bring better results,” Vucic told reporters.
