Less than half the population of Serbia would vote to join the European Union in a referendum, according to a poll by the Institute of European Affairs and the Ninamedia company.

The poll showed that 49.5 percent of Serbian citizens would vote in favour of joining the EU but it also showed that more than half the population support EU membership in principle.

Of the total of 1,201 people polled, 62 percent said they believe Serbia benefits from relations with the EU.

Support for accession to the EU was stronger among older people, women and the residents of Belgrade and Vojvodina, the poll showed. Slightly more than half of the young people polled said they support membership in the EU.

The polled listed Greece, Spain and Austria as Serbia’s friends in the EU while Croatia, Great Britain and France were listed as enemies. Germany was listed in both categories.
