Denial of anti-fascism in Serbia

Serbia is seeing a denial of anti-fascism, university professor Dusko Radosavljevic warned on Wednesday.

Radosavljevic, who also heads the Vojvodina Anti-Fascist Alliance, said an attempt to impose “collective forgetfulness” was under way. “We in the anti-fascist coalition want to protect the anti-fascist struggle from being forgotten because there is a denial of the anti-fascist war in Serbia. Seventy and more years later, Serbia, which had every reason to celebrate and bled for the victory is now retroactively siding with the losers in that war,” he told N1.

“The motives have deep roots but we do not want our history to be forgotten. Revisionist theories have not only won themselves a place but have been given a priority,” he warned, adding that there are no openly fascist groups in Serbia but that there are things that are very much like fascism such as attacks on journalists, threats to national minorities, the treatment of women and actions of sports hooligan groups.

“When you take all those things into account you see that the state is incapable of dealing with them. If they get into the system we can say that neo-fascist tendencies have won,” Radosavljevic said. “The citizens will have to organize themselves and respond to all threats,” he added.
