The Army of Serbia (VS) Guards organized a parade and weapons and equipment exhibition to mark Guards Day on Friday.

The Guards are a brigade-level formation. The unit chose May 6 as the unit day on the anniversary of an order issued by Serbian Prince Milos Obrenovic to form the country’s first guards unit on that date in 1830.

Guards commander Major General Milomir Todorovic said the unit was always in the front ranks. “The 188th anniversary of the VS Guards makes us feel exceptional because we live in a society which views the military as part of its own integrity and dignity,” the general said.

Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin said in a written statement that the Guards play an increasingly important and strong role as an elite combat unit.

Former Serbian President, now head of the National Council to coordinate cooperation with Russia and China, attended the ceremony and parade with VS Chief of Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic.
