Activists of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) assaulted a man who reprimanded them for violating election rules on Friday by setting up stands and handing out flyers in the southern Serbian town of Vranje.

Serbian election laws forbid any public activity linked to elections in the 48 hours before polling stations open.

The SNS stands were put up in the main pedestrian street in Vranje with music blaring. The man came up to the mainly women activists asking if they knew the period of election silence was in place and recording them with his phone. One of the women assaulted him and tried to grab his phone, shouting abuse.

The violation of the election laws could mean a fine of up to 600,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars) for the SNS and up to 40,000 Dinars for each of the activists.
