The Serbian Environmental Protection Ministry said Monday that 25,000-30,000 liters of oil spilled into the Danube River in the vicinity of the village of Celarevo, Vojvodina, from an anchored ship sailing under the Bulgarian flag.

“The environmental protection inspectorate has made itself available to all services, it is on alert and ready to react in connection to the incident that happened near Celarevo,” the Ministry told the Tanjug news agency, reported the Serbian state TV (RTS).

Representative of the Vode Vojvodina Public Water Management company Jovan Vignjevic said that, according to the report by the captain of the ship sailing under the Bulgarian flag, 35 thousand liters of oil have spilled into the Danube.

“We are currently on the ship, it is the locality of the Danube near Celarevo. We, Vode Vojvodina, together with the water inspection, accredited laboratories for environmental protection, police services and sector for emergency situations are on site,” said Vignjevic.
