Serbian Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Goran Vesic said that the operation of unloading the remaining approximately 20 tons of ammonia from a wagon that derailed at end of December near the southeastern Serbian city of Pirot and its transfer to a safe location was completed on Tuesday morning, adding that there is no more ammonia leakage at the railway accident site.

A press release issued by the Ministry quoted Vesic as saying that this was a high-risk operation which was handled by the members of the Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Ministry, Serbian Interior Ministry’s Department for Emergency Situations and the City of Pirot Emergency Situation Staff.

The Minister stressed that the teams tasked with monitoring the quality of soil, water and air will remain at the accident site until the Emergency Situation Staff decides otherwise, said the press release, adding that the Serbian Railway Infrastructure teams are repairing the railway track so another three overturned wagons that did not leak could be lifted.

“I expect to get a report from investigation committee that I set up, as well as a report from the prosecutor’s office in order to determine the circumstances under which the accident took place,” said Minister Vesic.
