Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s claims of attacks on him by the Guardian and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung met with denials from both of those dailies.

The Guardian and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung were asked to comment Vucic’s claims of attacks and his comparison of the two dailies and Bild newspaper to artillery in what he called a hybrid war campaign against both himself and Serbia.

The response from the London daily was short: „The Guardian is committed to fearless, independent journalism that holds those in power to account. We strongly reject these comments about the Guardian, which are completely unfounded, and any claims to the contrary have no basis in fact.“

Michael Martens of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said that he is not campaigning and denied that he wrote that Vucic is planning a war.

“It seems to me that the Serbian president knows very well that there is no hybrid media war against him – at least not from me and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, but I think also not from other western media. Whether this is true for Russian media as well, I do not know,” Martens wrote in his comments for N1.
“If Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung or other media would really wage a hybrid war against Aleksandar Vucic, so if they would treat him the way “Informer”, “Happy”, “Pink” or similar government media treat the President´s opponents, he would notice that for sure. But as far as I am concerned, this will not happen, as I am trying to do journalism, not campaigning,” he added.

“As far as the concrete allegations are concerned: Mr. Vucic claims that I wrongly interpreted his statements about Azerbaijan, and he of course has the right to say so. I would like to underline that I did not write that the Serbian president plans a war with 100% certainty. I just wrote that, judging by his comments, if Trump wins the elections and Richard Grenell becomes US secretary of state, a situation might arise next year in which he thinks he can bring the north of Kosovo under control without risking tough sanctions. And since such a scenario cannot be excluded, the EU should be prepared for it. Will it happen? Don´t know. Could it happen? Yes, it could – if the EU is not prepared to avert such a scenario by making it very clear that this would carry a high price tag for Serbia, mostly economically and politically. I consider Mr. Vucic a very rational actor who speaks and understands the language of the economy very well. And it is always good if you speak to a person in the language he understands best,” Martens wrote.
