The Speakers of the Albanian and Kosovo parliaments on Wednesday called for political unity in support of the dialogue to normalize Belgrade-Pristina relations.
Speaking at a joint news conference in Tirana, Speakers Gramoz Ruci and Kadri Veseli called the ruling coalition and opposition in Kosovo to show unity and support the dialogue.
Albanian parliament Speaker Ruci said politicians in Pristina should leave their struggle for power aside for the sake of Kosovo’s sovereignty, adding that official Tirana unreservedly supports the dialogue. “We are paying a maximum of attention to the dialogue and support the mutual recognition of Kosovo and Serbia. A possible agreement is in the interest of Kosovo and the region. The citizens of Kosovo have declared independence and that is the foundation and the only way to stability in the Western Balkans,” he said.
Kosovo parliament Speaker Veseli said that Kosovo is determined to continue down the road to the European Union. “Kosovo has its own independent and sovereign state. Kosovo promotes the rights of communities better than any other European country. We are determined to secure a place in the UN,” he said.
He added that Kosovo lacks unity. “(Serbian President Aleksandar) Vucic cannot harm the statehood and sovereignty (of Kosovo) with his visit. No statement can inflict more damage than a lack of unity. We want UN membership,” he said adding that there can be no talk about Kosovo’s territory.
Veseli is accompanied on his official visit to Albania by the head of Pristina’s negotiation team with Serbia Fatmir Limaj.
