The European Union Delegation and OSCE Mission in Serbia signed an agreement on a 300,000 Euro grant in aid to the media, EU Delegation chief Sem Fabrizi said on Friday.

The grant comes in addition to 2.4 million Euro from EU funds for the media, approved 10 days ago.

Fabrizi told the second day of an online OSCE regional conference on media freedom and journalist safety that freedom of expression is an important issue, adding that the media industry has faced huge challenges over the past 10 years, including digitalization. He said that professional media are the precondition for everything else. According to him, the main questions are providing support to the media in facing challenges while remaining loyal to the principles of independent, objective and professional reporting as well as securing economic stability for media outlets, media pluralism, transparency in media ownership and the safety of journalists.

The EU delegation chief said that the coronavirus pandemic brought difficulties everywhere, including Serbia, along with new pressure on journalists, loss of income, drop in circulation, more difficulty in accessing information on the measures introduced to fight the pandemic.
