Fewer deaths registered in first quarter of 2020, Serbian statistics office says

The Republic Statistics Office (RZS) said on Monday that fewer people had died in Serbia in the first quarter of 2020 than in the same period a year earlier.

According to RZS data, 34,642 people died in the January to April period of 2020, compared to 35,654 in the same period of 2019 which is 1,012 (2.8 percent) fewer deaths.  

The RZS said that fewer births were registered in the first quarter of 2020 than in the same period of 2019, specifying that 19,155 children were born between January and April this year compared to 19,384 in the same period of 2019 which is 218 (1.1 percent) fewer births.  

It said that there were 15,474 more deaths than births in the first quarter of 2020 compared to 16,270 in the same period a year earlier.
