A large group of inmates in Serbian prisons have given up one meal to help the poorest pensioners and other poor people during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Justice Ministry said that 4,280 inmates in four prisons – Sremska Mitrovica, Nis, Pozarevac and Novi Sad – decided to give up their Sunday suppers. “The idea to give up the so-called dry meal that they got on Sunday evenings came from the inmates who want to help the poorest. The prisons will work with local crisis staff to pack the food and send it to the people who need it the most,” the press release said.
It recalled that women inmates at the prisons in Pozarevac, Sremska Mitrovica and Nis have been sewing face masks for themselves and the penitentiary system since March 12.
