European Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said on Tuesday that European Union foreign ministers have decided to start membership negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania.

Speaking after a video conference with EU foreign ministers, he said that a political decision had been taken to start pre-accession negotiations with those two Western Balkan countries, restoring trust in the expansion process.

He said that the EU has included the countries of the Western Balkans in its mechanisms to buy medical equipment to help them combat the coronavirus pandemic and is considering the possibility of providing aid from its funds along with the 30 million Euro it has already secured for those countries to combat the pandemic.

“We are in contact with those countries and are assessing their needs,” Várhelyi said, adding that the European Commission is looking at ways to re-direct the existing funds to provide money to help the Western Balkan countries deal with the economic fallout of the pandemic.
