Serbian marketing expert Nebojsa Krstic called for an immediate ban on social networks, claiming that they are being used to spread false information about the coronavirus crisis.

Krstic, known for his statements in support of the current authorities, wrote in a column for Blic daily that Twitter, Facebook and Youtube should be shut down in Serbia for the duration of the state of emergency which called to combat the pandemic.

According to Krstic, “a well organized group of so-called opinion makers are active on the Internet pouring out poison, false news and misinformation 24/7”. “If infected areas have to be disinfected, we have to disinfect the public space which is consciously, intentionally deceiving the citizens and destabilizing the health care system,” said Krstic, himself an MD. He said that the disinfection operation would have to include some arrests.

Earlier, former Supreme Court Judge Vida Petrovic Skero warned that the state of emergency allows the authorities to take away the right to free speech which could include the media. She told the Beta news agency that the measures under the current state of emergency have not been clearly defined.
