In 2019, Serbia's Interior Ministry (MUP) Internal Control brought charges against 399 people, 209 of whom were police officers and other Ministry's employees, it said in a statement on Friday.

It added the most significant number of charges were filed against the low-ranked officers, border and traffic police officers, administrative workers and members of the criminal police force, while 33 high-ranked MUP employees.

Nebojsa Stefanovic, Interior Minister, told the members of the Internal Control their focus should be on those who helped the perpetrators of the most dangerous organised crime.

"That's the greatest danger, regardless if it's a banal thing like issuing a fake ID or leaking information about police investigations," he said.
