Ruling party officials have described a recent tweet by former parliamentarian Vesna Pesic as a call to murder President Aleksandar Vucic and hate speech, while prosecutors are already looking into the matter.

Pesic has, meanwhile, erased the tweet saying on Saturday that she knew that those in power will “ twist it around into an attack.”

“People know that they twist what is written around for their dumb attacks. I did not even think about something like that,” she said.

“The public prosecutor has ordered all measures to be taken regarding the matter according to the law,” said the spokesperson of the Prosecutor’s Office, Irena Bjelos, adding that investigators are checking whether the tweet contained elements of a crime.

Calls for prosecutors to act also came from the Speaker of Parliament, Maja Gojkovic.

The tweet Pesic posted read as follows:

“Let’s see what you will do when he (Aleksandar Vucic) is declared President for life. All while the Twitter community is tweeting without worries. You are not thinking about this. Putin just did that. If (Ana) Brnabic resigns then you must know - Vucic will be there for life. No boycott will help there, only a barrel to the head.”

Pesic argued that the last part of the tweet was referring to suicide and not to killing Vucic.
