Several hundred people staged a protest over air pollution levels in front of Belgrade city hall on Friday, demanding immediate measures.
The protest was organized by the Don’t Let Belgrade D(R)own Initiative whose spokesman Radovan Lazovic said that the authorities were not doing anything about the problem and added that the government has to be pressured into tackling pollution. He said that the population has to be informed without trying to play down the problem.
“The pollution in Belgrade is at dangerous levels 132 days a year. That is a long period, people get sick and die,” he said.
An anti-pollution protest has been scheduled in several Serbian cities for Januar 29.
