A group of civic activists stage a protest over air pollution levels in front of the Serbian government headquarters on Thursday, calling for the disclosure of what they said was the real data on pollution.
The protesters want Prime Minister Ana Brnabic’s cabinet to do something to change the situation in places where pollution levels are very high.
University biology Professor Biljana Stojkovic said the protest was symbolic, adding that the organizers were being asked “where the state leaders are hiding”. “Are they hiding in the fog was the idea behind the performance. This is an urgent issue of importance to every citizen of Serbia. We have indisputable data from foreign web sites which shows that the amount of PM10 particles, the most dangerous and smaller, are more than 200 micrograms per cubic meter of air in Belgrade and 500 in Smederevo. Those are huge amounts. Even in Chinese cities when they were most polluted those levels were not that high,” she said.
“The state leadership is evidently lost in the fog that they created themselves,” she said.
Stojkovic said she disagrees with Wednesday’s statement by the Prime Minister that there is no room for panic, saying that there is cause for panic because the pollution levels have been high for a long time.
