One of the tabloids that featured a front page story with details of the kidnapping of a 12 year old girl apologized on Thursday to the girl and her family following fierce reactions from public figures, state officials and journalists.

A press release from the Srpski Telegraf tabloid said that its intention “was not to inflict more harm on the victim” but to help make sure that the kidnapper, convicted rapist Ninoslav Jovanovic does not get away with the crime.

“Regardless of the fact that world media report in a similar fashion on similar crimes, this should not be an excuse. If we upset or offended even one person with the story, tht is reason enough to apoligize,” the press release signed by Editor in Chief Milan Ladjevic said, adding that the tabloid would continue reporting on the crime and demanding life imprisonment for the kidnapper.

The front page stories of several Serbian tabloids included details of the kidnapping based on Jovanovic’s statement to the police and prosecutors in which he described what he did to his victim.

Sharp reactions came from the Ministry of Culture and Information, Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic, the Journalists’ Association of Serbia, Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, opposition officials and several public figures.
