Belgrade deputy Mayor Goran Vesic filed criminal charges against opposition leader Dragan Djilas, blaming him for the incident at a promotion of his book on October 14.
Vesic, a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), claimed that Djilas organized what he said was an attempted murder.
A crowd of people gathered in front of the Progress gallery in central Belgrade’s Knez Mihailova pedestrian street to protest against Vesic and what they said he was doing to destroy the city. Vesic fled the scene escorted by plain clothes police followed by a group of protesters shouting Thief, Thief.
“Djilas organized the events in front of the Progress gallery when he issued an official statement several hours before my book promotion, calling his followers to gather and physically assault those of us who were at the promotion. He called people to create a conflict and riot, assault others and what is worst – spill other people’s blood,” Vesic is quoted as saying by the Tanjug agency.
