Finland’s ambassador to Serbia Kimmo Lähdevirta expressed concern on Friday with the media situation in Serbia.

The ambassador told Belgrade daily Danas that the lack of progress, as the European Commission said in its latest report, is a cause for concern. Serbia should create an environment conducive to media freedom and expression without obstruction and in line with the law, he said. “Questions should be answered about the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) and the Serbian state TV (RTS) and that is part of the dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties,” he said.

Lähdevirta also warned of “hybrid threats and misinformation” and added that transparency in government co-financing of the media is very important.
