Belgrade taxi drivers launched the first of what they said would be daily protests between 1:00 and 3:00 pm on Monday.
A statement on the Facebook page of the Contractual Taxi Chamber of Serbia said the protests were being organized because the government is not enforcing the law “against companies which are illegally offering taxi services through applications”.
Traffic Minister Zorana Mihajlovic issued a statement saying that protests and blockades of city streets were not good for the citizens. She said that the protest staged by the taxi drivers is not the solution to the problem.
The taxi drivers formed columns at noon in New Belgrade at the hotel Podgorica, at the parking lot in front of Pionir sports hall and at the road to Obrenovac, converging at the Serbian government headquarters.
The protest brought together members of several taxi companies and associations whose dispatchers also went off-line at noon.
The first protest was staged in central Belgrade on Friday.
Taxi drivers have been protesting the presence of companies like CarGo, claiming that they are unfair competition.
